Letters from Nepal XIII

Another bout of rain which we expected due to the season. During the monsoon, the rains come very quickly but we do get some clearing each day.  Once the humidity reaches its peak, the clouds release.

The temperatures here have been pretty constant. In the early morning it is low 70s and then it builds up to the mid 80s.

Each day the school starts with the same way. The children line up, sing, exercise, and then say their national anthem with their hands crossed and placed over the heart with eyes closed. If the children waiver at all they get a light tap on their wrists or head.

It is a bit harsh as the kids are anywhere from 3-6, have been standing in line for 15 minutes prior but it encourages discipline.

In Nepal, they still use canning at the school. Bunty does not do this but she encourages firmness and intonation in her voice. Again, to us it seems she could tone things down a bit but she feels it works and she does get results with the special needs children.

Roshton is a petite 4 year old who is mute. He can hear but does not speak. He enjoys any stimulus he can put in his mouth and can be found licking the steel support beams if not watched carefully.  His parents also lock him up. He is, or has been, abused and is often seen regressing into his own world. He can initiate play. Today he did not want to interact with the kids during exercise. We started to play a game of hide and seek around some of the steel pillars which he initiated. He laughed without sound, had smiling eyes and tried to run. Roshton has weak muscles so he will be standing but then just collapse to sit, which is his favourite place to be.

The focus for him is to stand and bend to pick things up off the floor without collapsing.  He is also learning his name and how to spell it.  We think he understands things but can not communicate. One of the programs on the iPads is a communication app for children which are pictures that they can point at and then add into a sentence to get their idea across.

The wood for the playground arrived. The wood had to be shaved down from whole logs, planed, notched, etc.  We are in the process of sanding down all the pieces which will take us most of the day.  Two will work with the children in the morning and then two in the afternoon so a nice complement of health care and construction.

Everyone has managed to stay bug free, and by this I mean intestinal as well as critter free from the children.

Our power has been sporadic and internet is the same.  Sometimes an email will go through but the photos are another matter … so be patient with us.

Thanks to all those who have supported us in the venture.  Tomorrow we will be delivering the items to the school as we wanted to hold off until we had a feel for the school, teachers and directors.  The iPads will be used with the special needs kids here as well as some of the other schools around.  Till tomorrow …
